SIDE A:
I'm guessing all the tracks here are untitled since I can't find anything
that says otherwise. BOAR is a project that gets a lot of praise and hype,
For good reason. Every release I have heard so far has been pretty solid
and "Painful Transformation" is no exception. Machine-like buzzing pans
out and expands along with humming synth drones filtered through slow
motion chorus/phaser effects. A dark, crawling soundscape that drifts,
dives and rises like a monolithic beast from the bottom of the ocean.
The piece comes across like pure electric energy being channeled out
at the hands of a man who has absolute control over his instruments.
Focused and precise. Additional layers pile on and overlap, taking
turns to surface. Fluttering and corroded textures are added to the
mix and give the track a sense of movement and makes it feel like it
is building to fulfill some unknown purpose. Definitely on the lighter
side of BOAR's audio spectrum. Deep, brooding and cavernous drone work
that resonates as scratching bits of debris chip off the walls as if to
warn us of a cave in coming soon. Murky tones peak and subside as the
scratching becomes more intense and the overall atmosphere becomes more
dangerous. Following this, The next track comes as a much Harsher and
hostile work. Harsh noise, Blown out static, Frantic signals and crunching
distortion. In other words...That cave in has begun. A furious avalanche
of Harsh tones and panicked experimental noise. It sounds like a small
frenzy of terrified creatures are squeaking and crying out in absolute
fear as wave after wave of cascading dust, dirt, debris and wreckage
falls upon their worrisome little skulls. Roaring pedal drones reach
out and retreat as all is lost under ten tons of aural destruction.

SIDE B:
On the B side, BOAR continues to demonstrate all out audio chaos.
Merciless and uncompromising. Here everything is louder and crashes
in with tidal force. Much denser and devastating. Warped frequencies
struggle to be heard under HNW caliber distortion. Crunching, ripping
Harsh Noise that comes like pounding hail upon everything under the sky.
Rumbling, grinding, and utterly earth shaking tones gnash their teeth at
one another in a fierce display of power and force. Again we hear a lot
of strange experimentation added to the mix for additional flavor. Storms
of static blow out and erode everything in a matter of seconds. It sounds
like we are in the eye of one of the worst winter storms imaginable. Things
let up long enough for us to gain our composure and then revert back to
fucking shit up. Random beeps and bloops usher in weird cut-up segments
and panning distortion that seems like it can't make up it's mind on where
to strike next. Distorted movements like tumbling rocks and boulders begin
to churn out as obscured filter abuse lurks in the distance. The track glitches
and cuts out repeatedly at odd times, which keeps things interesting and keeps
the listener guessing. Every time you think the track is over something new happens
and proves you wrong. It's like the Harsh Noise equivalent of an indecisive, grumpy
ass old man trying to figure out where the fuck to go and what the fuck to do. It's
a pretty damn intense listen to say the least.

ALTHOUGH MY FAVORITE BOAR RELEASE IS STILL THE FULL LENGTH "YOU WILL NEVER  BE HAPPY," "PAINFUL TRANSFORMATION" IS STILL AN EXCELLENT TAPE AND A PRETTY GOOD PLACE TO START FOR ANYONE NEW TO THE PROJECT. FANS OF DEVELOPER/SWALLOWING BILE/CREATION THROUGH DESTRUCTION/CITIZEN 213 AND PROJECTS ALONG THOSE LINES
WILL DEFINITELY ENJOY THIS ONE:

7/10
