SINEW TO REVEAL THE CRIMSON RIVER:
It is not often that an album perfectly blends Black Metal and Noise
and also presents tracks of each genre without the other on one album.
In fact the only one that comes to mind is NEKROSOV's "Extinction" album
from a few years back. Now that is not to say that there are not amazing
artists doing Black Metal/Noise hybrids. E.G. GNAW THEIR TONGUES, EMIT,
UTARM, T.O.M.B. (early) Etc, Etc...But it is rare that you get the best
of both worlds presented both together and separately on one disc.VERMIIN's
"Spiritual Parasites" does just that. This is the first album in a long time
that I have played on repeat religiously.VERMIIN takes a minimal and very
raw approach to music that wouldn't sound quite right any other way.We begin
with "The Desolation Chamber" inviting us in with bone cold Black Ambience
and ultra dense Death Industrial. It stirs like impatient orcs on the eve
of battle and lets out a harsh war cry in a blackened tongue.John Stilling's
vocals sound utterly vicious.Deep spoken word passages fill the air with a
toxic breath to weaken the enemy before the next assault.Harsh static and
violent quakes of sub-bass and thick electronics begin the march to victory
as unexpected guitar riffs arise from the void. The guitar work is top notch
and the riffs are as cold as a Scandinavian winter.Sorrow, Despair and Anger
charge the atmosphere and Heavy Electronics flood the room.It is not often
that anything Black Metal related actually sounds dangerous anymore but VERMIIN
have managed to bring back the spirit of the old days."Hexenheim" hits like an
atom bomb and scorches anything in it's wake.Again the riffs here are incredible
and sound closer to early 90's Black Metal than anything in recent memory.Vocally
this is fucking rabid.Possessed by Black Fucking Metal and released through a vortex
of blistering and misanthropic noise.Riffs vanish and re-appear giving way to dead
and emotionless fields of static and electricity. This album was made by people with
an understanding and appreciation for both Metal and Noise that is beyond obvious.
"Head Of Death" creeps in like an approaching storm.Waves of crackling static and
distortion roll in like an avalanche.Distorted and rhythmic.Like skin being scraped
from bone over and over again.Rhythms in the tradition of bands like NON and as black
as BEHERIT play on with no reason other than destruction in mind.It sounds like the
mindless march of carrion carrying flesh to a sacred place where it will be devoured
in a massive ritualistic feast of decay."Pentagramaton" takes a different approach
and starts with harsh feedback and mind raping frequencies.Distorted vocals laced in
shrill feedback come in waves as warped noise gushes like blood from a fresh wound.
Haunting and beautiful synths add a sense of saddness and empathy and nearly dissapear.
Once again pitch Black riffs in the vein of early DARKTHRONE or GORGOROTH inject the
atmosphere with despair all while psychotic high pitched frequencies scream and die.
If you are into artists like DEATHSTENCH or THE SLAUGHTERED LAMB then this is a CD
you NEED in your collection.Harsh Noise like a freight train crashing off it's rails
make up the last end of the track.Pounding rhythms that show no mercy and guitars
that slice as sharp as bonesaws."VERMIIN" is a unique track compared to the others.
Daemonic screams announce the approach of the rebirth of the 90's Scandinavian Black
Metal sound. This track sounds like it was discovered in a time capsule.I haven't heard
anything this close to the glory days ever.Beautiful lead guitars wail over grim and
frostbitten riffs and dive into a funeral dirge of bleak despair. This is only the calm
before the storm.A taste of what's to come."Traveling in Lower Spheres" could have been
taken off of a 90's Black Metal demo tape.If I was told it did I would never even think
to question it.At first it sounds like a Power Electronics track starting it's slow ascent
and then BOOM! Blast beats, dizzying riffs and raspy witchy vocals.Once the synths begin it
is a nostalgic trip to the blackened past.Think early EMPEROR, SATYRICON, ENSLAVED, Etc.The
synths have an uneasy affect that I haven't heard in ages...Along the lines of IMMORTAL or
maybe even "HVIS LYSETT" era BURZUM.Utterly evil and glorious.Blazing in a rush of Hell fire
all the way to the finish."Kuru" is a different beast.Harsh electronics and displaced percussion's.
The screeching of nails of sheet metal.Utterly painful to listen to.Disorienting riffs like what
you'd expect to hear from BLUT AUS NORD or something like that.Distorted and downtuned vocals.
This must be that "Frost Demon Storm" IMMORTAL was always going off about.A chaotic fuck fest
bathed in blood and piss.Towards the end of the track things wind down into a quiet crawl til
death."Vigeland" starts out with crushing heavy drones similar to DEATHSTENCH or SUNN O))).
Slow and malignant like a cancer that chews it's way through you're organs.Deathly cold Death
Industrial and Black Ambient that spews out like a tide of inhuman hatred.Strange guitar leads
appear and vanish and all fades into a sinister resonance similar to ABANDONED ASYLUM or TERRA
SANCTA."Tearing through Sinew to Reveal the Crimson River" begins like a STEEL HOOK PROSTHESES
track. The trademark distorted and pitch shifted spoken vocals laced in phasers and "wet" effects.
The accompanying noise comes in the same manner.Dripping and drooling as it buzzes around your
head like poisoness insects looking for the right vein to inject their venom into. And with a
sudden pinch that marks your death they find it.Again we have a blistering Black Metal track
with the ancient spirit of the old days. This one is about as violent as it gets.Hatred seems
to ooze from every pore of Stillings and Bathory Legion's body as they play inverted hymns in
the shadow of the horns. No bullshit. No gimmicks.Just pure fucking Black metal until the track
ends with spoken samples concerning horrible things and screeching noise that sounds like the
claws and speech of a thousand plague rats in a bile soaked sewer. There is an untitled bonus
track at the end after a few moments of silence consisting of high paced riffs and the kinds
of screams that could burst the veins in your neck.A sudden shift brings us buzzing and humming
noise and then another explosion of blackened madness. The kind of stuff that makes your room
rattle and your windows shake. It ends in crackling static and anxious ambience.R.I.P.
BY FAR ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING AND WELL PUT TOGETHER RELEASES WE'VE
HAD THE PLEASURE TO REVIEW IN A LONG TIME.THE RESURRECTION OF 90'S BLACK
METAL COMES AS A FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER BUILT AROUND HARSH NOISE AND TOTAL
