Never thought I would have the privilege to write up a new
FIRE IN THE HEAD release."A History Of Obsession" is the first
new F/I/T/H disc since 2011 if I am not mistaken. As most of you
know Mike Page has spent the last few years recording experimental
ambient music under the SKY BURIAL moniker. And while there are some
similarities in style here...This is definitely a return to the F/I/T/H
sound."Resurrection" and "I Am Vengeance" are two shorter tracks that
start off the album before going into the 16 min + "The Hypocrite's
Manifesto." "Resurrection" begins with low synth drones and distorted
noise that grinds it's way to the top.Scraping the soft mush from your
brain and replacing it with violent static.Disembodied vocals appear and
vanish over pulsating synths and roaring distortion. It sounds like a large
machine digging a mass grave...There is a good chance they will be put to
use by the end of this."I Am Vengeance clocks in at a little under 2 mins
and serves as a corridor of sorts from track one to track three. One that
is filled with violent shrieks and disorienting and heavy synths.Slashing
noise tears wounds in soft flesh and leaves you asking for more with gashed
lips and lacerated tendons.Short and brutal.A healthy dose of mechanical rage.
"The Hypocrite's Manifesto" is a much different beast. At first it sounds like
it would be more fitting on a SKY BURIAL record.Familiar synths paint surreal
images as metallic percussion's are beaten out over rumbling synth bass. Both
frightening and beautiful at the same time.Slow like floating in a pool of
unearthly liquid.A cryochamber of sorts.Whirling tones blend with clicks
and scratches. The speech of otherworldly creatures in excited chatter fills
the air.Crystal chimes and pulsating energy beams dance around like malevolent
creatures of myth and legend. This overall vibe on this one brings to mind the
recent REGOSPHERE/XIPHOID DEMENTIA split on Annihilvs/Phage Tapes.Motors rev
and purr as things fade into darker shades.Everything begins to feel like a
Dali painting turning into a real life nightmare.Violent steel percussion's
echo and dead gods stir from ancient slumber with heavy breaths. There is a
strange ancient and arcane feeling to the piece.Feedback rises and what I can
only describe as trademark F/I/T/H electronics begin to play.Ringing assaults
come and go.Nauseous rhythms begin and stop.Steam spouts from unseen devices
and the distorted death march of secret mechanisms plods on.We are midway through
the belly of the beast when buzzing insects fill the air and violently strike the
listener.Bubbling, dripping electronics froth and ripple like the venom injected
into your veins.Harsh phased out noise is heard as everything comes to a painful
crescendo.Viscious vocals laced in hate and vinegar lash out with a rage I haven't
heard from Mr. Page in quite some time. There are so many layers and textures applied
here that it is hard to capture it in words. It is obvious that much time and thought
went into making these tracks. The best way I can sum it up would be in two simple words:
"Organised Chaos." "One More Delusion" comes as cold soundscapes, freezing gusts of wind
and sinister bass rhythms. The vocals have been absolutely molested with effects and phase
in and out of both ears. All the intensity of grade A Death Industrial combined with the
might of Power Electronics.Emergency sirens blare in the background and disapear as quick
as they came.Dark and deadly...Just as this style of music should be."Nothing Always Happens"
Slowly builds as disjointed static and humming feedback turn into a roaring inferno of sound.
The level of high end harsh noise you'd hear on earlier F/I/T/H releases.Deeply distorted raspy
death growls echo in a tone as black as fresh ash. This is probably my personal favorite on this
album. Not too long but excellent none the less.Repeating mantras hover in the air and choke the
hope from the atmosphere as noise like glacial avalanches strike until all fades out and onward.
"Insurrection" hits hard right from the start.Harsh high end noise, soaring feedback and crushing
distorted sub-bass.Deep screams fire off over chaotic frequencies and maniacal noise.Buzzing,
crunching, and powerful noise at it's best.Signals are sent out and lost as are any attempts
of finding any sort of aid or relief.A rough sentence served to the agonizing fullest. If you
like your Power Electronics pissed and fed right the fuck up then this is for you.If not then
I hate to break it to you but your getting into the wrong genre of music."Box-cutter Blues" is
a dreamlike ride.Once again all is surreal and disorienting.Everything feels unreal and yet
dangerous at the same time.Harsh noise that sounds like it's being ran through a high powered
wind tunnel in your direction.A vortex of electricity like something out of an old Frankenstein
film whips and rips in every direction.Distorted down-tuned vocals hover in the air like black
clouds filled with pure negativity. At times it sounds like an orchestra of power tools and razor
sharp saws in a march towards victory. Not a dull moment on this one.A total cacophony of madness
and insanity.Spiteful vocals come with venomous intent filling your ears with another dose pissed
off ranting. All I know is Mike Page sounds completely fed up and has no problem with letting you
know about it.There is so much disgust in his voice that you can cut it with a knife...But I think
he'd rather turn the knife on you."The Coming Silence" lifts off with a radiating hum and spoken
samples.Crystalline tones fill the air like fragile snow flakes. All is vibration and everything
resonates.Cataclysmic distortion like mortar fire begins as shrieking rockets light up the sky.
If silence is coming then war is first and mass casualties are the reason it happened."Wet" noises
and frequencies drip from the sky as radio transmissions and radiation scanners have a conversation.
More samples start with no foreshadowing beforehand.Lost radio programs discuss hypocrisy and religion.
Whether or not anyone is still alive to listen is a question I can't answer.Hissing steam comes in what
sounds like conducted rhythms as low drones stretch out until they are spread too thin. These are replaced
by pulsing electronics and spoken verses on insanity. All ends in shrill feedback and grinding distortion
to drive you as mad as those noted just moments ago.At the end there is an untitled track that begins
with the corrosive touch of acid rain.Distant distortion comes closer and closer as sharp electronics
perform an unwanted lobotomy.Rhythmic slices of noise circle your skull and raspy screams spew violent
words in your face. You can almost feel Mike Page spitting on you as he screams.Wailing feedback swirls
on the air like mocking specters.Looped screams taunt and provoke the listener to be filled with just
as much rage as F/I/T/H is demonstrating. One last bout of electronic rhythm and a few last screams to
ensure that your good and pissed and it all ends...

I COULDN'T ASK FOR A BETTER COMEBACK ALBUM FROM THIS PROJECT.
EXACTLY HOW A POWER ELECTRONICS RECORD SHOULD SOUND:

7.5/10
