IRM-THE CULT OF THE YOUNG MEN-CD
ANNIHILVS POWER ELECTRONIX/APEX005
POWER ELECTRONICS/HARSH NOISE/DEATH INDUSTRIAL
COMES IN A JEWEL CASE WITH FOLD OUT INSERT.
ALL TRACKS RECORDED LIVE AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS
I.) THE CULT OF THE YOUNG MAN:
Ok so first of all...Every track on The Cult of the Young Men was
recorded live. This album is a compilation of various live performances
showcasing the power and energy of an IRM performance.Martin Bladh
and Erik Jarl don't just entertain their audiences...They command their
attention and force them to submit before them.Low drones flood out
into a sea of faceless people.High notes that resemble time stretched
church organs create the feeling that you are witnessing a sacred
ceremony...And in a way you are.Drifting electronics to put you in
a trance like-state.Martin Bladh sings/screams with passion and emotion.
His voice is unique and all his own.Lyrics concerning children killing their
brothers and fathers echo over the audience like subliminal messages.Cracks
of heavy distortion and scraping noise grind like knives as they are sharpened.
Preperation for the acts described in Martin Bladh's narrative.IRM keep it dark
and heavy and they do this in a stye that is all their own.Everything they do is a
unique experience for the listener. The intensity grows and sucks the air out of
the atmosphere...Replacing it with an atmosphere only IRM could create.Like
being transported into the deepest chambers of Bladh and Jarl's minds.
II.) HERE ARE THE YOUNG MEN:
Soaring high synth notes and distorted static rhythyms.Perfect amounts
of delay and reverb are applied to every tone and texture creating an
almost disorienting effect. This is loud, heavy and dark but not in a way
that you would expect when hearing those terms. It is hard to explain
just how IRM achieve such an atmosphere of brutality.Their sound is
twisted and sadistic.Demented and violent. The heaviness in their songs
is like the weight on your chest when in a life or death situation. That
feeling of sheer anxiety that weighs you down and wears you out while
in a state of fear and panic. When IRM take the stage it is as if the air
itself is trying to crush you into dust.Warped electronic static rises and
hisses like venomous serpents preparing to strike.Vocals filled with anger
and contempt add to the seriousness of the situation.IRM sound dangerous
and spiteful. It feels as if they take their live shows as an opportunity to
unleash their disgust on the crowd before them. They stand in witless awe
like sheep to the slaughter as static blades slice into their flesh in a frenzy
of bloodshed.Lyrics are repeated through several effects and drill their way
into your thoughts.Everything begins to wind down to a close leaving you
with the imprint of the final words ringing in your mind.
Huge bursts of noise and static come like a sudden avalanche. However
this isn't straight HNW style noise...Here there is much more movement.
This sounds alive...Well, alive in a mechanical sense.Like a massive construction
of cold steel coming to life and programmed to terminate anything organic that
it may come across.Metallic percussions are used and are louder than any I have
ever heard before. The level of volume I'd imagine you'd experience if you were
to see EINSTUERZENDE NEUBAUTEN perform live in their early days.Like a
choir of compactors singing songs of the rapture...In other words...This is totally
fucking relentless. It sounds like this is partially improvised but also thought out
and rehearsed.Synths like war horns or perhaps the sounding of the seventh trumpet
fill the air and black out the sun.Endtime instrumentals for your last few agonizing
IV.) STAGE OF CRUCIFIXION:
Once again coiling serpents slither through a fog of living static. The hour of
death approaches as the crowd huddles in to witness the death of a prophet.
Martin Bladh screams through warped effects over low pulsating drones and
grinding electronics. It sounds like he is both judge and executioner.Screaming
out the sentance and then carrying it out in sadistic pleasure.Cruelty and murder
are his closest companions and he has brought them to the party.Vocally speaking,
No one else sounds like IRM...Musically speaking it seems like there are many who
owe alot to these guys as their influence and inspiration over the current Power
Electronics scene is both obvious and undeniable...Basically, Martin Bladh is like
the Ian Curtiss of Power Electronics and Erik Jarl (Insert name of your favorite musician
here.) This has a quality to it that you hear with bands like GENOCIDE ORGAN or
NYODENE D...High quality and pissed of stuff!
V.) AKTION ANATHEM:
Dreamy and fierce all at once.Synths stretch out and expand in seemingly
endless strands.Once again we have loud and massive sounding percussion
work.A dangerous drone through a nightmare dimension. This sounds like
it was recorded in the bowls of a giant furnace. The furnace itself serving
as a drum to be beat upon.A myriad of strange and interesting textures
are applied. This sort of sounds like CAULBEARER meets NDE or SKY
BURIAL meets GNAWED.A creative mix of transcending drones and
brutal percussions.Towards the end all becomes pure electricity.Live
wire static that carries us into euporia.
Euphoria starts out as utter destruction.Like shifting plates neath
the Earth coming to life and fucking shit up.Distorted synth Rhythyms
and vocals that resemble an Adolf Hitler speech.Passionate commands
are shouted at the audience.Bursts of harsh noise assault the listener
joined by slamming metallic percussions. The "drumming" sounds like
a room full of medical trays and utensils being ransacked by a mad man
on a fucking warpath.Nothing feels too random or out of place however.
Everything is timed and used at the perfect time to enhance the track and
keep it moving. If your into really angry Power Electronics like RU-486/
GNAWED/BEREFT/Etc then you need to get this album A.S.A.P.
VII.) RENT BOY:
Ringing feedback and ominous ambience. The sound of silence amplified
and in motion.Something rustles in the background like a serial killer
preparing his work place.Knives are sharpened and saws are placed upon
a cold operating table.Perhaps the Rent Boy is his latest victim...Or maybe
he is the killer himself?...Shrieking feedback peaks and vanishes.Chanted
vocals dance on the edges of the track but remain in the background.Strange
grinding sounds begin to gather and whip at your ears like winds filled with
barbed wire and razor blades. The drone of feedback that carries the track is
equally sharp and cuts deep throughout the performance. The grinding noise
grows in volume signaling that the time to commit the crime is close at hand.
It begins to sound like bone saws slowly cutting through limbs and tendons.
All the while Martin Bladh continues to sing a little song to himself.
Loud and slow drumming upon what sounds like large, empty oil drums.
Deep piano notes are slammed both recklessly and carefully.Everything
marches forward in a slow lurching rhythm. The vocals hang in the distance
and are laced with phaser effects cranked up past ten. This gives Martin's
voice a disturbing "wet" quality...He sounds human but possessed.Soothing
but dangerous. The Fnale on The Cult of the Young Men lasts nearly twenty
minutes.A long trial of dense Power Electronics with a Death Industrial vibe.
Minimal and repetitive but by no means boring or half assed.IRM are like
careful and calculating killers. They come to inflict pain and suffering in large
quantities but they do it the smart way. This sounds like an endless fucking
nightmare.High anxiety and no trace of a silver lining...Instead this looms
like a cloud of pure black negativity and follows you wherever you go.The
rhythym is almost like the quiet footfalls of a stalker with you in his sights.
Things slow down to a loud pounding and echoing vocals full of distress and
worry.A simple "Thank You" gives way to a sea of applause and it is all over.
...Or is it?...Your in Luck. The good people over at ANNIHILVS POWER
ELECTRONICS were just nice enough to include a bonus track at the end
of this massacre.Church organs and tapping rhythms joined by thick ambience
and shifting winds.Spoken vocals that bring to mind THROBBING GRISTLE
hang in the air and charge the atmosphere.Everything feels warm and electric.
Think of T.G. tracks like "Hamburger Lady" or maybe "In the Nursery" from
PSYCHIC TV...This is similar as it drifts on and has that style of vocals going
on.It almost sounds like low saxaphones are playing and stretching out like
reaching fingers that never seem to grasp what they are struggling for.Soft
pianos and throbbing drums that sound like a steady heartbeat replace this
suddenly.Strange whispers and sinister spoken vocals for a brief time and then
it is a barrage of various harsh noises that come as a choir of united chaos. An
utter malestrom of severe trauma. This is harsh as shit but the drones are still
there guiding the insanity along and unleashing it where it belongs...Right in
your fucking ears.Shouted vocals are added to the mix.Thick winds blow and
sound like tormented voices in a twisting vortex of suffering. If you haven't
taken the time to check out IRM this is a great place to start.Just make sure
to check out their impressive back catalog as well...Pure static and feedback.
Exit stage left.
