HARSH NOISE/POWER ELECTRONICS/DEATH INDUSTRIAL
COME IN A FOUR PANEL DIGIPACK.
Sound collage style noise created with metallic objects...
Canisters, coins, birdcages...Sounds that can be made with
various objects of the sort.Spoken female vocals speak harsh
truths as sub-bass frequencies and grinding static rise from the
depths of silence.The backing noise becomes more intense and
is joined by waves of feedback.Chaotic yet controlled.All falls to
near silence save for the gentle throbbing of an undercurrent of
bass.Harsh Noise takes the place of what was once so quiet.Those
same spoken vocals continue but are now filtered through delay
and reverb.Haunting and dizzying synths drift like miasma through
the ether.The distorted screams of Zach Adams fill the air.Drenched
in angst, anger and desperation as the ghostly female voice laughs and
taunts him like a vivid memory.This sounds beyond bitter and disgusted.
Like a homicide waiting to happen.
II.) FOR HER:
Static rises with the squealing of metal scraping on metal.
An ambience of feedback drones and hums in the air as the
vocals begin.Distorted and repeating through echos of anger.
An old song plays on an old 45 somewhere in the distance then
fades into silence.Like before this sounds utterly pissed.These are
the kind of vocals one would expect to be unleashed after a long
period of holding in painful emotions...Eventually they are going
to burst to the surface and when they do you'd better hope your
no where near.Lucky us..We get a front row seat.That old record
starts spinning once again...This time warped and fucked up to the
point that it starts skipping...Forming a new rythm to back the track.
This can be compared to artists like GNAWED/HUMAN LARVAE/THE
BIRDCAGE THEATER/Etc/Etc...The old 45 plays once more bringing track
two to an end.
Spoken vocals concerning wrongful accusations open this short track
backed by very low sub-bass and dark ambience.This is pretty much
an intro or a bridge to the next track.Clocking in at just a little over
30 seconds...Lets see what this leads us to next.
IV.) NYLON ANGEL:
fragile and melodic chimes.Sub-bass gathers and rises along
with electronic pulses and lazer like synths.Down-tuned, pitch
shifted spoken vocals add a sense of melancholy and regret to
the piece.This is softer than the first two tracks by far...For now
at least...The lyrics concern love, lust and bondage and yet the
overall feeling of sadness in this track is undeniable.It sounds
like one deep in recollection recalling the lustful adventures
of his youth with both joy and loss in his voice.Low pulses like
the amplified beating of the wings of insects join the ongoing
wind chimes and music boxes that fill the air.Dense static also
presents itself and gives way to wailing but not overpowering
feedback.This grows in volume without covering the sound of
the chimes in the distance...Though they are now quite obscured.
A haze of electronic pulses clouds and almost covers all that was
before...As if the memories have triggered a rush of anxiety sending
everything into a blurred panic.The noise almost sounds like taunting
voices and children's laughter at times...The chimes return though more
menacing and wandering this time.Those somber vocals have returned as
well but with a more sinister tone.Brittle chimes fade into silence as we
step into the parlor.
V.) IN THE PARLOR:
Strange distorted synth rythms that make me think of COIL and NON
start this one.They are quickly obliterrated by steaming feedback and
harsh distortion.Whistling and screaming in a fog of hot smoke.Spoken
vocals recite words of forbidden perversion.The overall vibe is one of
danger and uneasiness.For a little under two minutes you are subjected
to Zach Adam's inmost dark desires.When you get done chewing through
the ropes he's bound you in then join me on the next track.
VI.) GOD KNOWS:
One thing worth noting is this is a very varied album.VERDANT is by
no means a one trick pony...Probably closer to a human pony girl with
many tricks up her sleeves.An uncomfortable drone that sounds like
something has been time stretched hovers as violins play out of tune.
This one is similar to FUNERAY CALL meets NURSE WITH WOUND
or maybe really early CURRENT 93...All the while deep vibrating bass
movements churn out like rolling fog beneath all of this.For a brief time
midway through only the violins remain and it sounds similar to a small
chamber orchestra warming up and tuning their instruments.Glass objects
clatter and bows are scraped across old strings as deep spoken vocals and
menacing synths are heard.A chorus of shouts fills the background and then
vanishes.Parts of this remind me of the main theme from the movie Insidious.
And honestly the word insidious is a very fitting description.
VII.) YELLOW JACKET:
This is a very interesting track as far as concept and subject matter.
I would love the chance to sit down with Zach Adams and discuss
what this symbolizes to him...As the name suggests the track is filled
with spoken passages concerning the yellow jacket.This is deeply poetic
and brings to mind childhood memories of being stung and awe striken
by the dangers and beauty that nature can pack into such a small package.
Dark ambience similar to SKY BURIAL or PHELIOS drifts and expands in
all directions.Birds chirp in the trees above as very quiet rythms awaken
in the background.A perfect balance of Death Industrial dread and serene
but dark atmospheric music.Rumbling that sounds like it is coming from
the earth beneath the floorboards is heard quaking into existence.We are
close to halfway through the track when everything winds down to deep
pulsing synths and the tones that have carried over from the opening of
the song.It is now that the spoken words begin to vividly and poetically
describe the yellow jacket.The details in the lyrics really make this a neat
track and really bring it to life.What sounds like insects chewing, spitting
and forming nests or colonies begins backed by low and shifting drones.We
close with odd electric pulses and a few parting words.
High end frequencies gather and rise...Piercing like needles.Swarming
electronics congregate in a busy mass.Soft spoken female vocals can be
heard repeating a brainwashing mantra.A second layer of spoken vocals
similar to the first begins as static noise hovers over a gentle melody played
on piano.A perverse male voice speaks in detail on how he prefers his women.
Samples from black and white 1950's movies are added to the mix as the noise
increases and becomes more menacing.Grinding electronics and slightly distorted
vocals with a multitude of samples are present along with metallic percussions and
various other noises filtered through phasers and other effects.An electric pulse comes
fourth from nothingness and rises to a crescendo followed by repeating samples urging
you to "stay supple" and one last perverse line..."The swollen, puckered asshole bookended
with smeared mascara."
Right from the start this isn't what most people would consider "Pleasant..."
But fuck most people.This is a noise blog so here at Traumatic Static, this
is the type of shit we live for.Rapid fire machine gun fast hard electronic
pulses and warping signals in an orgy of effects and weirdness.Ambience
rings out played on high notes...Lingering after the initial blasts fade into
the distance.Static cloaks the air.Metals clang in the background and then
another blast perhaps even harsher than the first.This is similar to some of
EN NIHIL's work as well as GNAWED or FIRE IN THE HEAD...We are in
pleasantville for a little under four minutes and then it's 40 years of sodom.
X.) 40 YEARS OF SODOM:
This is another short track that serves as a bridge to tie the longer tracks
together.40 years in the blink of an eye.The hands of clocks tick and you
can hear the rustling movement caused by an unknown source.Deep and
downtuned spoken vocals narrate the piece.He speaks from a quiet room.
Someone coughs in the distance without interrupting his story.The hands
of time click through the silence until it is apple blossom time.
XI.) APPLE BLOSSOM TIME:
Humming and buzzing electronics bleed out as the sounds of women
suffering fill the air.Cries of suffering and agony...Witchy spoken vocals
begin.Their tone like a demented necromancer who is obsessed with
2nd wave Black Metal conjuring up some sadistic spell to invoke pain
for his pleasure.Harsh grinding noise assaults the listener as raging vocals
like those heard in the first two tracks come in a blistering blast.A poem
of violence recited along a chorus of shrapnel...The demented spoken words
are still present throughout as well as the tortured cries of female victims.
Phasers wrap their tendrils around the screamed vocals blurring the lines
between rage and reason.Things quiet down towards the middle of the track
allowing the moans of suffering to really shine.Women writhe in pain as electric
drills and countless other instruments of torture are plugged in to sparking outlets.
This is the kind of depravity you would expect from bands like SHP/IRM/WHORID/
NTT/Etc/Etc...Grinding blades and spinning saws fill the air with a razor sharp hum
and chunks of flesh.One final cry through a haze of static and it's all over.
XII.) BROWN OXFORDS:
Flowing ambience in a dreamy drift...Right when you start to space out
you are shocked back into focus by loud live wires and metal grinding
noise.This sounds like Power Electronics actually created with power
tools...At least the harsher layers of the piece.Weird electronic pulses
join in and ultra loud distorted screams bring the album full circle.
The mix of low pulses and loud vocals brings to mind THE VOMIT
ARSONIST's more recent works.The album sort of ends abruptly...
A few last screams and all quickly fades out leaving you feeling
like your in between dreaming and waking.
THIS IS A VERY ENGAGING AND VARIED ALBUM.
VERDANT SHOWS THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO PICK
ONE SPECIFIC STYLE AND RIDE WITH IT TO MAKE AN
INTERESTING ALBUM.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR
THOSE SEEKING SOMETHING DIFFERENT:
