THE BIRDCAGE THEATER IS:
I.) HURRICANE DIRGE I:
High end noise breaks through the silence and leads the path for
a coming tidal wave of deep rolling synth drones that expand ever
outward in a seemingly endless loop.Distorted vocals scratch and
claw deep into the center of your ear canals.The music itself has an
almost shoegaze quality to it reminding me of NADJA at times.Breaks
in the waves are brief and only allow for the swirling sub-bass currents
to gather before once again crashing on the shore that is your senses.
The vocalist sounds like a crow or a raven in a fit of rage more than he
does anything even close to human.Feedback forms a thick haze like the
fog that blankets the harbour of a seaside town.This "Hurricane" comes
in slow motion...More like the faded memory of a great storm long past.
Power Electronics that behave as Dark Ambient.Track one ends in a drawn
out drone of resonating feedback to carry us off into the Finite City.
II.) FINITE CITY II:
Whistling winds blow over thick synth bass in minimal Industrial rythm.
Those deep bass tones that bands like OPPONENTS or REGOSPHERE use
to great effect.Moody synths form a great shadow over everything.A heavy
darkness like a vast black skyline devoid of stars or moonlight.The city is
near silent save for the distant calls of police and ambulence sirens.Like a
soundtrack to a night of walking in the shadows of back alley's in the most
run down and unsafe area's of New York City.Muffled screams can be heard
obscured by the deep ambience that is the night.An atmosphere so thick and
intense that it nearly overwhelmes all else.The sense of danger is strong and
heavy.These are unfriendly streets...You can almost smell the scent of urine
and cold concrete as the track drones on...The hairs on the back of your neck
stand at attention as if warning you that a cold blade is coming closer to your
warm flesh with each passing moment.The rythms from before become the sound
of your heart beating as the adrenaline rushes through your veins...Then it is all
over as if it was all a vivid dream...The kind that feel too real for comfort.
III.) SAFE AREA:
This has an almost orchestral quality.Stirring strings blend together like a
climatic scene at the end of a dramatic thriller.If Hitchcock made Power
Electronics it might sound something like this.Like the rest of the album
so far this sounds cold and maniacal...And this is what THE BIRD CAGE
THEATER calls the "Safe Area"...Metallic pipes scrape and grind forming
a sort of percussion and beat.One that echos and reverberates for sometime
then vanishes as mysteriously as it appeared.Low feedback and heavy synths
in a cloud of controlled confusion.This is very similar to both THEOLOGIAN
and NAVICON TORTURE TECHNOLOGIES at the same time.Additional feedback
screams and swirls from places unknown.Screeching and raging vocals begin.Nearly
lost in a violent blur of distortion and wrath.The lead pipe rythms return filling the
track with an air of frustration and deep rooted angst.Again this feels like a traumatic
scene being played back in slow motion...Building in intensity as details of the event
are recalled and relived.Welcome to the theater...
IV.) KESTREL MUSIC I:
The music of celebrations of old fills the air backed by clanging concrete rythms.
Almost like a music box at times but with a little more "oomph" to it.There is a
bit of a "tribal" feeling to this as well with consistent beats and droning chants that
may or may not actually be there.Synths begin to rise and flood your speakers drowning
out everything that was before.This is a very slow moving album but don't mistake that
for boring as there is more than enough going on to keep things interesting.Almost break
beat type rythms struggle to be heard but are faded and lost...At least it sounds like this
but it seems that much of what you hear on this one is an illusion...Whatever your mind
wants to make of it.The vocals here sound disgusting and violent.Deep raspy screams that
sound like they are coming from flesh dripping jaws wet with blood and entrails.They speak
their piece while ripping warm meat to pieces and everything fades out like it never was.
V.) HURRICANE DIRGE II:
(ADDITIONAL VOCALS BY: MICHAEL MALONEY & HILARY WALKER)
So far this is kind of like a more Dark Ambient version of part one.This time we drift
on calmer seas.Lost in the middle of the ocean swept away and pulled far from any signs
of dry land.Everything feels hopeless but at the same time somehow peaceful.I guess we
all just want to jump in the sea and let it carry us to oblivion at times.There are movements
where this shifts to less friendly territory but they never last too long...It creates a feeling of
being pulled under into the black pits of the yawning sea but only to arise for air soon after.
Vocals glide upon waves of droning synths like predatory sharks that have the taste of blood
on their tongues.Slowly circling as they wait for the right chance to take down their kill..And
there is nothing you can do about it but float and wait for their jaws to rend you limb from
limb.They tear slowly...The painful process of death dragged out as crimson stains the dark
VI.) INEVITABLE RUIN:
At first this sounds like it is going to be the harshest track on the album but after the initial
BOOM that begins the final piece it all sort of winds down into a soothing drone of repeating
synths and static.Fragile chimes appear like spirits in the wind and vanish in swirling dances.
Deep pulsating sub-bass rythms begin to pound through the speakers as if something much
more malevolent decided it was time to piss on your picnic...Vocals like the strangled curses
of deadly wraiths assault the listener...Only pausing to allow the same fragile chimes that were
once comforting to tease you in mockery...Screams continue like billowing black winds that sweep
all life they come in contact with out of existence.Everything blurs and spirals downward forcing
you into the depths with it...And in the silent depths we end...
