MATTHEW AKERS: ANALOG AND DIGITAL SYNTHS.
SIDE A.)
I.) A HISTORY OF ARSON (PROLOGUE)
This album starts off like the begining of a documentary starting with
introductions to the judge and jury...But the real prize is the criminal.
In this case a lone destruction hungry arsonist. And just what led him to
do his crimes...Everyone is wondering...You try to figure it out while
listening to this prologue of stunning minimal synth work.It all feels
like it's like a race againgst time and your struggling to quickly put
together the clues.A mysterious and intriuging introduction.
II.) BAD WOLF:
The setting is very somber.I imagine a person that has done some very
harsh things to others and maybe even himself..and it makes me wonder
just where it all went wrong? What can make a person turn into the bad
wolf? Was it by force or fate? I guess one doesn't really know until they
are chosen..This is a soundtrack to just that.Soft contemplating synths
like a miami sunset as the day winds down and thoughts weigh heavy
on the heart.Soft cold wave tones set in as something begins to change
within the listener. All builds into a truly beautiful display of gothic dark
wave minus the vocals...Some stories do not require a narrative.80's style
new wave drumming signals the change has come and the "Bad Wolf" is
now on the prowl neath the neon lights of a busy city.I think I will follow
him into the night and see what sounds accompany him.
III.) DAS ZENTRYM DER WELT:
Semi-dark ambience and spacey synth sounds lead us atray into the vast
and infinite cosmos. It sounds like ELUVIUM if he spent a month listening
to nothing but SKY BURIAL and ZOMBI and attempted a peice drawing solely
from those influences. This track makes me feel like I am wandering through the
stars deep in thought and greatly anticipating what is next to come. It's that final
moment of the count of three where you either do or don't.The moment you realize
that you know you'll never have this chance again. And even though you will probly
get hurt or die...you make that jump anyways. The sound of embracing freedom.
SIDE B.)
IV.) VOYEUR:
This side starts out a lot darker.Sinister horror ambient like being stalked by
an 80's B movie serial killer.Sorta cheesy at times but pretty creepy either way.
This is that slow creeping sort of synth work that follows you around every corner.
You can pick up the pace as much as you want but it's still right there with you just
waiting to jab that over sized kitchen knife into your warm flesh in repeating motions.
V.) MIDNIGHT IN OCTOBER:
Total 90's techno/trance beats and rythms. It sounds like your walking through
some strange Tron-Esque Lawnmower man type of computer world.I have not
heard any bands or artists doing this sort of thing in a long time. This brings to
mind bands like AND ONE or THIS DIGITAL OCEAN.This is not by any means
your modern Daft-Punk/Deadmau5 bullshit in any way, shape or form.Towards
the end there are some nice oldschool industrial rythms and apocalyptic samples.
The track is a great surprise and never feels out of place. To put it simply...This
just works.
VI.) A HISTORY OF ARSON (EPILOGUE)
It all ends similar to the way it began.Slow synths reminding you of all you have
experienced in the previous tracks as you drift off into space once again in silent
thought.Music for people who like to ponder.Philosopher ambient to accompany
your walks through space and time. The fires have all died down and all thats left
is cooling smoke rising towards the heavens to drift and die.Warm tones blanket
the atmosphere and wrap you like a blanket of ash.Sci-fi synths from the 70's climb
in through an open window and carry you away with them into unexplored area's
of the universe a million light years away.A journey at the speed of sound.Like the
ending theme from a movie like KRULL or something along those lines.
SOME STORIES CAN BE TOLD WITHOUT WORDS...A HISTORY OF ARSON
IS PROOF OF JUST THIS:
7.5/10
