REVIEW - DREADLORDS-S/T-CDR

DREADLORDS-S/T-CDR
PRISON TATT RECORDS/PASSION AND TORMENT SERIES-PNTS01
BLACK NOIZE/HARSH NOIZE/FEATURING MEMBERS OF T.O.M.B.
AND PANTHER MODERN.
COMES IN CARDBOARD CASE WITH
ART PRINTED ON STICKERS.
LIMITED TO 50 HAND NUMBERED COPIES.
I.)THE MARCH OF DEATH:
We start out with a short intro a litte under a minute in duration.
Bass injected synths playing a creepy little Halloween-esque number.
This is similar to a MERCYFUL FATE or KING DIAMOND sort of keyboard
piece. It just feels like something is lurking over your shoulder the whole time.
Multiple layers mingle like a clan of goblins up to no good.Almost comical
at times.Regardless this is a fun little track and leaves you wondering just
what will come next.
II.) LORD OF CHAOS:
Ok so that intro was totally misleading...A split second of feedback leads
into warped noize followed by extremly loud blackened screams riding
on lightspeed winds of insanity.Fingers run across fretboards like rushing
spiders creating an intense display across blistering guitar scales.Huge bursts
of distorted sub-bass smother your senses. The vocals are an absolute cacophony
of blackened rage in a full out fucking frenzy.Again countless multiple layers are
combined to form the track but this time they are all relentless in a kill first ask
questions never sort of way. This reeks of disgust and anger.Like being judged before
the throne of  the senseless God Azathoth the lord of madness at the center of chaos
itself.
III.) BROKEN CHAMPION:
So I am quickly learning that you can't really know what to expect from DREADLORDS.
Here we have deep sub-bass rythms and beyond distorted guitar drones. This gives the
glory days of Southern Lord records a run for their money as well as a lesson in density
and decay.Thick pulses of low-frequency rumbling in a broken death dirge. My only
complaint is I wish it was longer but for what it is it is done to perfection.
IV.) DARKFRIEND:
Again we begin with a rumbling drone..This time twice as deep and twice as dark. This
almost sounds like it could be the start of one of TREPENARINGSRITUALEN's more
death industrial oriented tracks.Vocals come in dripping wet chokes. This sounds absolutley
disgusting.Like if the Aliens from the movie of the same title were behind the mic in a broken
attempt at threatening us in our own tongue.Dim feedback through lightless murky swamps of
distortion. The vocals that appear the second time are much more straight forward and come in
quick stabs of Black Metal style cursing.Raspy and in no way friendly. The end just feels like you
are being warned to keep your distance if you value your life. And with that we leave to take
new oaths.
V.) NEW OATHS:
Distorted electronic drones in Power Electronic style filled with titanic gusts of black wind
obscured vocals.Whatever unholy thing DREADLORDS are pledging an oath too it is probably
best left unknown.Daemonic rites backed by ritual chamber noize.Crunching and overly distorted
but not harsh to an extreme.Again we have something different. This album feels like a book of short
horror stories each based around a different living nightmare. Each track another chapter to leave you
caving more. The audio equivalent of a thrilling page turner.Like H.P. Lovecraft as an audio-book but
with the stories told by the actual events rather than the author's narrative.
VI.) CHANNELING TRUE POWER:
Deep distorted synth rythms churning out along monolithic pulses and massive guitar distortion.
This sounds huge.A black mass of unholy power rising from the depths of godless pits.Blasts of
white hot noize like rushing fountains of steam shoot skyward and fall in a cascade of burning
death.A perfect mix of Black Noize and Power Electronics uniting two of the feirces and relentless
forms of music known to man into one solid entity Hell bent on killing us all.Obscured screams
of primordial chaos reign across the heavens as true power is harnessed and aimed in your direction.
The all out death campaign that makes up the last few minutes of the track is an almighty display
of sonic slaughter.Nice knowing you.
VII.) VOICE: (FEATURING T.O.M.B. AND UNGOLIANT ON VOCALS)
Cavernous black ambience/death industrial that would be right at home on almost any Malignant
Records release.Occult incantations are whispered through a throat of gravel as half muted bass
guitars drone on endlessly.Cryptic black rasps fade into a cataclysmic wave of harsh static and
cutting synth ambience.Hidden undertones found here are so haunting that they are almost
melodic.Very similar to bands like DEATHSTENCH and of course T.O.M.B. Low winds fill
the room with pestilence as mournful moans of suffering die out into the darkness. The very
end catches you off guard.A howling ambience rising and falling in a haze of distortion.Next
we are cast into the pits to meet yet another doom.
VIII.) PIT OF DOOM: (LIVE ON WLUW RADIO SHOW)
High frequency noize fuckery in a mocking endurance test.Distorted blackened vocals that
sound like they are coming out of a walkie talkie or some other small device ring out over
the open air.Frantic high end pulses for a brief second and it's all over...I'll be honest. This
is my least favorite track on the album so far but it does show yet another side of DREADLORDS
and what they can do.
IX.) DAY OF RETURN: (FEATURING BRANDON HILL OF "PLAGUES" ON DRUMS)
Guitars echo through the emptiness and are joined by huge sounding slow paced drums.
That doesn't last long as the axe's swing in full attack joined by ravaging blast beats with
a vendetta.A pure Black Metal assualt.Heavy on the lo-fi.This sounds like a live jam session
from the early days of Black Metal's second wave. Not quite as raw as ILDJARN or WOLD but
in the same vein.As cliche as it may sound...This does sound very grim and misanthropic. There
are not a lot of vocals present and when there are they are muffled and lost way in the distance.
The track sort of just abruptly stops...Again giving that 90's Black Metal feeling and plants us
face down in the ground to touch the earth.
X.) TOUCH THE EARTH: (FEATURING BRANDON HILL OF "PLAGUES" ON DRUMS)
Another all of Black Metal Attack but this time twice as raw and somehow even more
aggressive than the previous track. The drumming is top notch and there are more vocals
present this time in the form of agonizing moans and howls in a sort of D.S.B.M. style.
Also the whole track is layered with screeching minimal noize and weirdness. The transitions
here are great and the entire pace of the song keeps your attention and never leaves you bored
or drifting. If I ran a label and someone sent this as a demo tape I would release it in an instant.
It almost makes me wish the whole album was done in this style but if that was the case this
would not be as special as it is.Sort of sounds like BONE AWL playing early ASH BORER style
Black Metal.
XI.) DESTROY TIME ITSELF:
BOOM!!! Total ripping distortion in pure Harsh Noize Wall style.Destroy Time Itself is beyond
a fitting title as this kills.Relentless unchanging rythms of crunching harsh noize that's a little
more on the low end for a little over six minutes.Basically a nice little number for all you kids
obsessed with VOMIR, WILLOWBROOK, INFIRMARY, Etc.
XII.) DAUGHTER OF THE NIGHT: (FEATURING GREG MOORE ON GUITARS)
Brief scraping noize gives way to beautiful acoustic guitars over haunting ambience.A nice
surprise as well as a great closing track.Lo-fi distortion and intentionally sloppy melodies.
All this is murdered by heavily distorted guitars and pitch black rasps and shrieks.Pure Black
Metal worship minus the drums in a deconstructed work of black art. This is to Black Metal
what SUNNO))) is to Doom.Stripped bare of everything but the overall feeling and emotion.
A very interesting approach and one that works very well here.Beautiful semi-clean tones,
melodic bass lines and stirring synth strings bring it all to a sad grave.
NOT ONLY DIVERSE BUT EACH STYLE IS DONE VERY VERY WELL.
MUST HAVE FOR METAL AND NOIZE FANS ALIKE:
8/10
